Mashhad is the second largest city of Iran, which is located in north east of the country close to the borders of Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. It was a major city along the ancient Silk Road and is also known as the holiest city in Iran, where the eighth Imam of Shia Muslims – Imam Reza- was martyred and his shrine is placed there. Even Its name comes from Arabic language and means the place of martyrdom (burial place of the martyr). Mashhad is one of the holiest cities in the Shia world, which is thought that over 20 million Muslims a year make the pilgrimage to this city.

Mashhad is also known as the city of Ferdowsi, the famous poet and writer of the national epic, the Shahnameh. Ferdowsi is buried in Tus, an ancient city that is considered to be the main origin of the current city of Mashhad.
